After pursuing several aspects of the business, I never really saw myself as someone who would book commercial work. But, after completing your workshop, that assumption has been completely flipped on its head! I now feel confident and prepared and can’t wait to start auditioning for commercials again! As an actor, I was always mystified when it came to handling commercial copy. Your workshop did two very important things for me. First, your workshop demonstrated a comprehensible, parsimonious technique to apply to commercial copy. Having this sense of direction when I pick up copy did so much to clarify the process and gave me something to work towards. It also illuminated the qualities I need to harness when reading commercial copy, and how I exhibit those qualities. I feel so empowered after having taken your workshop, because I can now enter an audition with concrete, tangible aims which I know will result in a much better read!The second thing your workshop taught me was how to relax when walking into an audition. So often in my training as an actor, I’ve heard ‘you have to be present and alert at every moment, and have a specific reaction to the other person in the scene.’ However, when you spoke about ‘drawing someone in to your conversation’ and ‘being comfortable in your skin’, I was encouraged to be more relaxed when I was reading. It’s especially difficult to be very intense and focused, while simultaneously being calm, confident, and at ease. As soon as I started reminding myself, ‘just be comfortable in your skin, relax,’ I started to feel myself grasping the technique. Beyond that, my performance in auditions improved immediately! The final day of the workshop, I received a last minute audition for a project James Franco is producing which I had to quickly prepare and attend that morning. The character exudes charm and as I was in the midst of your workshop, I was quick to remind myself that I can’t be charming if I’m tense. I let the nerves and stress surrounding the last minute audition slide away, and directed my energy towards the goal of ‘relaxing.’ In the end, I gave an audition that was very well received by the casting director, and that I was immensely proud of! I can’t say enough about how much your workshop has empowered and diversified me as an actor. I also wanted to share two exciting developments that resulted directly from your workshop. I’ve trained with a lot of industry pros over the years, but Amy is simply outstanding and her workshops are one-of-a-kind. It all started when I received an email about Amy’s one-on-one workshop a few years ago. In hindsight, receiving that email is one of the luckiest things that ever happened to me. After finding only fantastic reviews online, I decided to check it out. It was amazing. That one-on-one workshop was a total game changer for me. The experience overhauled my entire approach to auditioning. Her workshop is, without question, the best one-on-one workshop out there. I’m a big believer in the one-on-one format as a great way to get some quality time with established industry. The fact is, I don’t want to spend a lot of money or commit to a bunch of classes unless I know I click with someone. That’s the beauty of the concept. And while most casting director and agents who host one-on-ones just have you read and give you a little feedback, Amy’s workshops are entirely different. For basically the same small fee as one-on-ones elsewhere (where you’re given about 4 minutes if you’re lucky), you get three times that amount of time. What made this film a success were the great actors - and all of them came through Amy's casting. She reached out to actors who otherwise would never have considered such a small project, but who trusted her judgement completely and embraced the project, despite the micro budget. Amy Gossels is filmmaker Jeff Lipsky’s longtime casting director, and I had the good fortune of starring in his most recent, soon-to-be released feature “Mad Women”. I spent some time with Amy at the reception after the cast and crew screening, where she couldn’t have been warmer or more supportive. I was really taken with her lovely and generous spirit, and went on to attend a sold-out workshop she had coming up. While I’ve trained a great deal and thought I knew a lot when it comes to the craft of acting and I work a good deal as it is, I was amazed by how much I learned and how skillfully she instructed actors at every level. Amy clearly articulated, explained and demonstrated all kinds of amazing on-camera techniques that were not only new to me, but that dramatically improved all the participating actors' habits and made their commercial reads land rock solid in every way. The actors whose work felt amateur were transformed and suddenly able to give polished, professional reads, and the actors who were super seasoned transformed to give reads that were much more natural, authentic, engaging and spontaneous. She knows what she's doing, is incredibly honest with your work, and is able to fine tune your skills and work in a heartbeat. I even applied a lot of what I learned the very next day when I auditioned for a casting director I’d never met, and he was incredibly impressed. And I can say for sure that I wouldn't have made nearly such a great impression had I not implemented what I learned from Amy. I’ve auditioned for Amy Gossels countless times during my 25+ year career as an actress. Being called in by Amy is something I always look forward to, because she works on the most wonderful and interesting projects and auditioning for her is a joy.
